Winter Weather Reminders

As temperatures begin to drop, we want to take a moment to review our Winter Weather Protocols. This is the time of year when unexpected conditions may impact bus routes, morning routines, and the school day. While we always work to protect instructional time, student and staff safety remains our top priority.

When severe weather approaches, the Putnam County R-I leadership team closely monitors conditions using the latest information from the National Weather Service specific to our area. Decisions are made with careful consideration of:

  • Road conditions across different parts of the county

  • Visibility and wind chill

  • Timing of storms

  • Safety of student drivers and bus routes

If a schedule change or school closure becomes necessary, we will communicate through:

  • ParentSquare (alerts, text, and email)

  • Automated phone calls

  • School Website

  • Social media

  • Local TV and radio outlets

If no announcement is made, school will operate on a normal schedule.


2-Hour Delay Information

If weather conditions improve throughout the early morning but require additional time for roads, parking lots, and sidewalks to be cleared, the district may issue a 2-hour delay.

  • A 2-hour delay means the school day will begin 2 hours later than normal.

    • For example, instead of an 8:15 AM start, school would begin at 10:15 AM.

  • Bus routes will run exactly 2 hours later than their usual pick-up time.

  • Breakfast will still be served. Students may eat in the commons as they arrive, beginning at 9:45 AM.

This option allows us to maintain instructional time while helping ensure safe travel conditions for students, staff, and families.
