Important Calendar Update for 2026–2027
We want our Putnam County R-I families to know that our 2026–2027 school calendar looks a little different than originally planned due to a recent decision by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
This year, DESE denied more than 130 Missouri school districts’ requests to begin school earlier than state law allows. Missouri law restricts districts from starting more than 14 days before the first Monday in September. Because our request was not approved, we were required to adjust our calendar to comply with state guidelines.
As a result, our first day of school will now be August 24, and the first semester will conclude on December 18. While this shifts some instructional pacing and semester balance, our leadership team worked carefully to build a calendar that protects instructional time, meets required hours, and supports students and staff as smoothly as possible.
We understand that calendar changes impact family schedules, activities, and planning. Thank you for your flexibility and continued partnership as we move forward together.
