Ideas to Help a Struggling Reader

The school year is almost half-way over. That means your child should be at the “half-way” mark through his/her current grade level. The work is getting harder, the school routines should be automatic by now, and you should be able to see some changes taking place within your student---academically and in maturity levels.

However, some students are struggling with reading. These students may be a little immature or strategies might not be ‘sticking.’ In the classroom setting I have found that many students just don’t pay attention. Teachers cannot change that factor. So I have been doing some personal research on reading strategies and ways to help these struggling readers.

In an article entitled, How to Help Your Child Improve His Reading Skills by Sondra Rochelle, she emphasizes that parents need to be proactive in their child’s process of learning to read. She lists eight things all parents should do to ensure their student’s reading success:

  1. Become a Reading Role Model

  2. Keep Reading Materials Available in the House

  3. Visit the Library

  4. Read to Your Child

  5. Provide Books Kids Can Read Themselves

  6. Introduce the Classics

  7. Choose Reading Material They Like

  8. Discuss What Your Kids Read

Her article is very encouraging and helpful. Many parents may not know how to help their child when he/she is struggling and this author explains each strategy in detail in this article. Her ideas are very simple and inexpensive.

As for item #3, I would just like to stress that Putnam County has a wonderful public library. Our community really needs to utilize this resource to its full potential. Our small community is very lucky to have such a nice public library.
