Busy Opening Week for the Lady Midgets

by Aaron Fitzpatrick

September 01, 2010

The Lady Midget softball team got back into the swing of things this fall with a very busy opening week with games against Penney, La Plata, and Marceline.

The Varsity squad opened their season with a very close game against the Penney (Hamilton) Hornets.  The Midgets got off to a hot start scoring two runs in their first inning of the season.  The Hornets fired back with two runs of their own in the home half of the 1st inning.  The game turned into a defensive one until the lady Midgets scored one run on an RBI single from pitcher Samantha in the top of the 4th inning.  The Midgets rallied again in the 5th inning scoring three runs on RBI hits from Kaitlyn and Chelsea.  A late burst from the Lady Hornets allowed them to score three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, but the Midgets' six runs were too much to handle and they held on to win, 6-5.

The second game of the week featured the Lady Midgets squaring off against the La Plata Bulldogs in PC's first home game of the season.  The home crowd was in store for an exciting game as La Plata was the first to strike, scoring two runs in the 1st inning.  The Lady Midgets were held scoreless until the 3rd inning when CF Katie drove in a run on an RBI triple.  Katie was then driven in on a Kaitylyn single, who later scored on a single by Marissa.  After several hits by both teams, the Bulldogs led 6-4 going into the bottom of the 7th inning.  With two runners aboard, the Lady Midgets were down to their last out when pitcher Samantha drove the ball into the left-centerfield gap tying the game on an RBI double.  After holding La Plata to no runs in the 8th, the Midgets were down to their last out again in the 8th when Marissa drove the ball to the outfield, scoring the game-ending run and lifting the Midgets, 7-6, to their second win of the year.

In their third game of the week, the Lady Midgets traveled to Marceline.  The visiting Midgets were at it again as they scored two runs in their first at-bat on RBI hits from Marissa and Chelsea.  Marceline answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 1st.  From then on, it was all Midgets, as they scored 8 unanswered runs to beat the Tigers, 10-1.
