          Reading News

Welcome back to school! It is hard to believe it is already September.  The students have jumped right back into learning.  This is the time of year teachers, students, and parents notice the “summer slide”.  During the summer children tend to lose a little of the reading progress they made during the school year.  This comes from not reading much for three months.  I like to tell them reading is like exercising.  If you stop exercising for a while it takes a little while to get back in the swing of things.  Here are a few ideas to get children back to where they were:

1.     Get a library card.  The public library has a good variety of books for children of all interest levels.

2.     Read together.  Children love to have adults read to them.  You could also take turns reading a page or a chapter.

3.     Kindles, Nooks, and many other tablets have apps that offer free books.

4.    Magazines are fun to read.  Sports Illustrated for Kids and Time for Kids have bright pictures and           interesting articles that children really enjoy reading.

5.     Reading websites; PBS Kids, Storyline Online, Wegivebooks.org, and Childrenslibrary.org.
