Students Learn More About Their Family Histories

Mr. Christensen

Sylvia B. works on her family tree and including information going back to the 1750s.

Recently in American History class, we finished our discussion about Ellis Island and how millions of people immigrated to the United States at the turn of the 20th century. As a way to bring this even closer to home, the students did research into their own family trees and their individual families' connections to immigration. Students used a number of sources to not only research their family's origins but also had the opportunity to reach out to family members and get more information from them that way. Overall the students had a fun time learning about their family histories and discovered that a lot of what we talked about in class could be traced back to their homes as well. A number of students were able to trace their family histories back to the 1750s or further back.
