Health Update

Keeping your students safe is our chief concern.

Putnam County R-1 School District has received a number of questions about a student who, according to information provided to the school district, has been diagnosed with meningitis.  The district does not have, and of course could not provide, detailed information on the student's condition.  However, we have received general information from the Health Department and other sources that can be shared with the public.  We understand that parents are concerned about their children's health.  According to the information that has been shared with us, the student has a form of meningitis that is not highly communicable.

Additionally, the student was diagnosed well after school was dismissed for the winter break.  Therefore, it is unlikely that any transmission of the condition would have occurred prior to the break.  Additionally, due to the form of meningitis and the significant length of time that school was closed for break, it is not necessary to conduct disinfection procedures on school premises.  That said, we just wanted you to be aware that the district is consulting with and following the advice of public health officials and will continue to do so.  In the meantime, if you or any member of your family experiences symptoms that cause concern, it would be appropriate to consult your health care provider.  If the district receives additional information that may be shared, you will be informed as quickly as possible.
