The students in my 1st Grade Title Reading have started using a program called *Word Warm-ups. It is a program designed to support students in decoding words accurately and automatically. It was created by the same company that does Read Naturally. They follow similar steps and the students move at their own pace.
The Word Warm-ups procedure is as follows:
- The student will listen to an audio recording identifying the phonics or syllable pattern that applies to the words he/she is learning; the student will then read along as a proficient reader correctly reads words with this pattern.
- The student will then practice reading words with the featured phonics or syllable pattern several times until he/she can read them at a predetermined goal rate of words correct per minute.
- The student will monitor his/her progress by keeping a record of his/her score on the timed readings before and after practicing.
As the student’s decoding ability increases, he/she will continue to work on more difficult phonics and syllable patterns, continuing to master each set of words at the goal rate.
*Information about Word Warm-ups was taken from the blackline master letter to parents.
