Kindergarten News

I wanted to thank all of you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to come to parent-teacher conferences last week!  I truly enjoyed talking with you about your child’s progress.  I cannot believe May is just around the corner and will soon have to bid farewell to my second class!  I will definitely miss them and hope they stop by from time to time to visit me next year!

Communication Arts:  This week we completed week three of Theme 8:  “Down on the Farm.”  We continued practicing blending, segmenting, and substituting phonemes (individual sounds) in words.  We also reviewed and built sentences with our high-frequency words.  In addition, we reviewed the letters Ff, Hh, and Ss as well as practiced building and blending short i, short a, and short o words.  Furthermore, we discussed using singular and plural naming words, and we talked about familiar animals’ babies (such as puppy, kitten, piglet, etc.).  Finally, the students practiced evaluating and making inferences/drawing conclusions with stories that we read.

Math:  This week we worked on identifying and matching equivalent sets and doubles.  We also practiced drawing pictures for “some, some more” stories, recording the answer to a question on a chart, and determining questions for a two-choice survey.  In addition, we learned to identify cones, sorted three-dimensional shapes, and practiced handwriting numbers 11 – 30.  Finally, we discussed identifying the time of day as day or night; the time of day as morning, afternoon, or evening; the likelihood of events; and whether certain events are more likely, equally likely, or less likely to occur.

Book Order:  I have included a book order in your child’s folder.  These are due back to me by Wednesday, March 28th if you are interested in ordering.  Our classroom activation code is HNK8H if you are interested in ordering online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs.  Thank you so much!

Reminders/Upcoming Dates:
• Next character education assembly:  Friday, Mar. 30th at 8:30 a.m. in the elementary gym.  Following the assembly, there will be a MAP/Stanford Testing Kick Off with a Luau theme to help motivate students to do their best on the test.   Therefore, students are encouraged to dress up in school-appropriate Hawaiian/beach attire on Friday, March 30th.  If students wear swim attire, they must wear clothing over or under it.
• March Book-It reading logs are due Friday, Mar. 30th.  This is the last month for Book-It certificates.
• April 12:45 early-out days:  4th and 11th
• No school:  April 5 – 9th for Easter/spring break
• Stanford testing for KG, 1st, & 2nd grades:  April 16 – 20th
**If you are able/willing, we are asking parents or treat senders to send any snacks/treats you wish to contribute during that week for the class to share (anything is fine except for hard candy due to risk of choking).  These items help give students a “boost” throughout the day to keep their minds focused for the test.  We are not asking for bottled water due to having a water fountain in our classroom.  The students will also really appreciate the snacks as a reward for working so hard on the test!
• Kindergarten field trip (local):  Friday, May 4th
• Elementary track and field day:  Friday, May 11th
• Summer School:  May 29 – June 29

Have a fabulous weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Ingersoll
