A+ Career Fair

High school students were given a glimpse into a variety of careers at the A+ Career Fair April 6.  Each student attended four thirty-minute sessions in a small setting.  Half of the presenters are alumni of Putnam County R-I who showcased successful careers back in their hometown.  Presenters zeroed in on skills and training necessary for success, working conditions, pay ranges and technology usage.  The career fair is just one of several activities provided to help students identify potential careers.

Presentations were given by:  Megan Ingersoll Roof (REMAX Realty) and Jacquie Deeds (Hart Abstract), Alicia Vestal Smith, Dan Jackson (Physical/Occupational Therapists) and Kate Brummit (Exercise Science), Cari Brummit Gorkowski and Tisha Seaton Thrall (Putnam Co. Memorial Hospital), Ellen Gordon (Homeland Security), Lacey Roof (Probation and Parole), Kristy Cullum (Main Street Styling), Mariah Hollabaugh (Putnam Co. Memorial Hospital), Lana Ledford and Jesse Knowles (North Central REC), David Perkins, Dave Brennecke, and Deryl Niffen (Murphy Brown), Scott Hollabaugh and Tyler Mason (Mo. Conservation), Terry Selvy (Mo. National Guard), Devon Pickering (Carpenter) and Torey Weston (Weston Heating), Dr. Brad Hines (Corydon Veterinary Clinic), Brian Selle (Monsanto), and Scott Collins (Buckner International).

The Career Fair was organized by Mary Comstock, A+ Coordinator.  Several presenters used A+ benefits to help pay for college and/or technical school.  Requirements of the A+ program are 2.5 minimum grade point average, 95% attendance, 50 hours of tutoring, and good citizenship, including the unlawful use of alcohol and drugs.  A+ graduates receive free tuition and general fees at any Missouri public community college or technical school.
