Candy Cane Science

We spent the days before Christmas break doing many fun activities tied into the holidays and things we had been learning about.  The 4th grade teachers were thrilled to get to take the entire 4th grade class to the movie theater in Centerville for a private viewing of the movie "Wonder".  Our class read the book as an interactive read aloud, where I read the book to the class, and they completed many related activities along the way.  The class loved the book, and though the movie is very different, they loved it as well.

We also had some holiday related STEM projects.  One task was to create Christmas trees out of gumdrops and toothpicks.  The students found this challenging but very fun!  We also did an experiment with candy canes, as you can see in the pictures.  We placed candy canes in four different liquids to see which one would dissolve it the fastest.  We used vegetable oil, vinegar, cold water, and warm water.  Students had to create a hypothesis, and write about their experiment.  Ask your favorite 4th grader which one was the winner!
