2nd Grade Gets into the Holiday Spirit

With all of the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, second grade has found time to celebrate the season and learn! We read the story Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. The story is about a young boy who wants a new "cool" pair of shoes but needs boots. He buys the shoes too small with his own money. He decides to give the shoes to a friend who needs them. He was so proud of himself for thinking of his friend.

We made connections with the text in our Social Studies unit where we are learning about needs and wants. We also talked about the time of year and showing kindness to others. We filled a kindness jar with things we can do to help others.

We have also been reading How to Catch Santa by Jean Reagan.  We used time during writing to write creatively making our own plans of how to catch Santa.

The students worked on letter writing and wrote a letter to Santa that will be featured in the local newspaper. Please watch the paper for our letters!

We read a nonfiction article about Snowflakes and how they are all unique. We then created our own snowflakes to see how different they all were even though we were given the same directions!

Today we read about Hanukkah and Christmas traditions. We compared and contrasted the two holidays and wrote an informational text to demonstrate what we have been learning.

2nd graders will have a lot to share this holiday season with their families!
