Making Segmenting Words “Pop”

During small reading groups, students have been practicing segmenting consonant vowel consonant words like pig, bat, etc. We use tap out the word on our fingers to count the sounds. Then we use counters to mark the sounds. Finally, we write the letters that spell those sounds. Some words have a "heart part". These are words that may be harder to spell or read because they don't follow traditional English phonics rules like "said" and "the". This practice is called orthographic mapping. A great way to practice this at home is using the newest hot fidget toy - Pop Its! Below is a link to a great website with many ways to use Pop Its for education purposes!
