Kindergarten News--Feb. 1, 2019

Dear Parents,

We missed so many days of school last week that we just picked up where we left off with Th. 5 Wk. 3.  The weather has been pretty wild and we are adjusting to missed days, late starts, and early outs the best we can!

Communication Arts:  This week we completed Theme 5, Let’s Count!  The students continued practicing blending and counting phonemes (individual sounds) to make words, and we reviewed and built sentences with our high-frequency words.  We also continued discussion about story structure (beginning, middle, and end) and practiced questioning, categorizing/classifying, and monitoring/clarifying details in stories we read.  In addition, we talked about using describing words, and we met a new alphafriend, Fifi Fish, for the letter Ff as well as reviewed the letters Gg and Pp and learned a new word: when.

Math:  This week we started Topic 6, understanding addition.  We explored addition, represented addition as adding to and putting together, and used the plus sign.

We’ve made it to 100 days!  We have been counting every day, working toward 100 school days.  If weather cooperates, the 100th day of school will be Friday, February 8th, and we will be doing a few activities to celebrate! (We adjusted for the days of school we have missed.) We are asking the students to each bring 100 small edible items (please count them out at home) to school by Thursday, February 7th.  (such as Cheerios, Fruit Loops, raisins, miniature marshmallows, M&M’s, chocolate chips, pretzels, animal crackers, etc.).  We will mix all of our items together to make a trail mix to eat during snack time. Please remember to wash hands when you and/or your child handle the food to reduce spreading germs and illness.  Thank you!

Valentine’s Day Party:  Our Valentine’s Day party is coming soon, they will be held Thursday, February 14!  I wanted to give you plenty of time to be thinking about your child’s Valentine’s Day box.   Please help your child find/make/decorate a Valentine’s Day box to bring to school for Valentine’s cards/candy.  We will not be making Valentine’s boxes in the classroom.  Each year the students are very proud and eager to show off what they made at home with their parents. Valentines boxes need to be at school by February 13th.
